Genre Task

We were given a task to use DISTINCT and we had to apply this technique's to 4 different films trailers and how the genre is portrayed throughout the clip. The four films were:

• Oculus
• Dan Stevens
• Vow
• Guardians of the Galaxy

Some of these Trailers contain to genre's this is called a hybrid genre. A Hybrid genre is where a genre overlaps with another genre e.g. Rom-Com

Oculus: This film trailer categorises into the genre of  Horror. This film was set in a creepy house which immediately shows us this is a place no one would like to be. It is set in the evening which is a time where you cant see without the use of light and this shows us that this was a place which was dark and mysterious. The immediate change of lighting showed this sense even more as the contrasts shows the fright of what is happening. The small amounts of characters shown gives us an indication that we are not supposed to no the other characters and that the limited amount of characters indicates to us this is a horror as we do not see one characters face. The music gives it a creepy feel and that it is waiting for something bad to happen.

Dan Stevens: This film trailer categorises into the genre of Action/Thriller. This is called a Hybrid genre. This film is set in a battlefield where combat is occurring on a field and along streets. This shows us that immediately action is taking place and that there is some kind of war which is being brought inland. The music is a constant flurry of impact with the music continually being loud and dangerous with no lyrics as a sign of the constant shooting of guns. This genre thriller is shown when a mysterious man shows his mysterious presence with a face that does not change. This shows us that this man is different to everyone else. He also has more focus than any other character which shows he is important.

The Vow: This film trailer categorises into the genre of Romance. This film is set in a light hearted setting of a city than the sun is shining. The music starts off slow and the lighting shows us that the two characters are in love as they look so happy and the camera focuses on them together. This however changes and the music quickens and this lets us know that something bad has happened and the lighting dims showing us that the love has ended. The characters are shown to be separated which also shows the divide in love. There are two main characters which shows us that it is between them which is love.

Guardians of the Galaxy: This film trailer categorises into the genre of Sci-fi/Comedy. This film is a Hybrid genre. The film is set in space with various high tech weapons and machinery is used to show that it is an Sci-fi film. There is constant action shown in the trailer with combat taking place. This film is shown to be a comedy by taking the mick out of someone called 'starlock' who no one has heard of even though he thinks he is famous. Comedy is also shown as there is an upbeat music which does not match the combat scenes which have been shown.
